Much of the work in the Inheritance series is about responding to being an artist or to artistic thinking both past and present. Life and Art are inseparable in this process and what becomes the most important things are the creative solutions and possibilities of action that these can hold. One of the things I found impossible to ignore in artistic life was the way artists are treated by the system of galleries that they are dependent upon. Galleries at all levels find many ways to disrespect artists. I found this especially appalling when I have seen so many artists make so many sacrifices just to keep a studio practice. It was important for our community to have a place where we could dialogue about our experiences working with others and share both the good and the bad. Through an exchange of knowledge gained individually perhaps we can collectively find the galleries that treat us well. This is a responsive artwork and mild solution to this problem that I inherited when I became an artist. It continues to blur lines of community, audience participation, interaction, art and life, product and producer. It is a work dependent upon the community, which uses it and could never be placed to suffocate in a gallery wall, as it’s live in real time on the net. Like all things with life in them it is organic and allowed to grow and change with the interaction of artists and experiences. Also since the 70’s we as artists have been academically trained to rebel. But is it rebellion once it’s a generational tradition? What does rebellion even mean anymore. Perhaps, rebellion is simply to stand up for your ideals and create resistance for the formulaic and standardized, which the gallery system is. Hence this is my attempt to add new breath and dimension to the great tradition of the avant-garde and to give my community voice..www.BadGalleries.Org
