Diving For Tu m' was made in the great tradition of "the death of painting" paintings that have been sprinkled through the mediums history. It was an amalgamation of two such works. Tu m' 1918 was Duchamp ' s last painting and is seen as a catalog of ideas about painting. The title is made from a French verb that can mean a few different things; one of them being you bore me. Jasper Johns painted Diver after a friend of his committed suicide by diving into a river. It is a direct reference to the Duchamp painting painted after a forty four year interval. My painting to be completed exactly forty four years after Diver combines both of their visions with my own sentiment of the now traditional mortality of painting.
