American Painting was at first a great and successful attempt to define who we could be individually and collectively. Today this understanding is taken for granted by many artists who where born not needing to create a definition of who they are beyond themselves. What would happen if the expressionist visited our studios today? How would they feel about this new climate? Each dozen of eggs stood for one of the greats of that period that I would have had over for dinner, Jackson, De Kooning, Newman, Guston, Motherwell, Rothko, Frankenthaler, and Hoffman. Two artists who do come over for dinner at my house a lot then created this imagined interaction with these legends by throwing all of the eggs at me. The resulting conversation was left on my living room walls, and me. A beautiful abstract expressionist painting was the result. The painting continually changed until it stank a few hours later. In this reality the older it got the harder it was to ignore its powerful and odorous presence.
