In 2005 I was forced to make a financial decision between having a home or a studio. The year before I had met several artists who lived in Brooklyn and could not afford both and had chosen to live from their studios. These studios had no running water and where not really heated. After meeting them I questioned if I would make the same decision if forced with that kind of dilemma. When the time came I choose to keep my studio and found myself living in my office where I was employed as an art professor, so that I could afford to keep my studio and stay with the arts community I was engaged in. The photographs in this series represent my life from the year I lived from my office. “Home” presented as both a slide show reminiscent of a family photo presentation from the early 70’s when I was born into my family home, and book is not a political statement about the hardships of life as an artist. Rather what impresses me by all those who have made the decision of studio over comfort is the strength of spirit and lack of negative attitude about their choice. It is simply that, a lifestyle choice and the right one to make them the happiest they can be in their current set of circumstances. This piece is a celebration of the artist’s choice and the degree of commitment they have to what makes them healthy, a studio practice. |
